GCK: Towards an ambitious energy reduction plan with Cleaneo

In a constantly changing industrial landscape, GCK, a group dedicated to decarbonising transport through innovative technological solutions, found itself facing major challenges. With seven sites in France, GCK has become aware of the crucial issues linked to the competitiveness, margins and environmental impact of its operations.

One site in particular, GCK EMI (Electro Mécanique Industrie), was the scene of a fresh start after the takeover of a company in legal receivership. Faced with the need to restore competitiveness and profitability in order to maintain jobs and plan for future development, GCK turned to Cleaneo, a company specialised in energy performance. The aim of this collaboration was to take up the challenge of optimising the site’s energy consumption and to find opportunities to cover part of the energy costs.

Another step towards energy efficiency

To gain a comprehensive understanding of the energy challenges faced by the GCK EMI site at Brassac-les-Mines, a rigorous audit process was undertaken. The scope of this review encompasses a site of 22760 m2, with a covered infrastructure of 7250 m2, located close to agricultural areas and a commercial zone within the municipality. The main objective of this energy audit was to carry out a complete energy analysis of the site, covering electricity and natural gas consumption, thus representing the company’s entire energy bill.

The audit process took place in several crucial stages, starting with a kick-off meeting to frame the project and define the necessary resources. The preparation phase then involved careful data collection and analysis to identify key areas requiring particular attention. The next stage involved on-site work, including detailed observation of production processes and the gathering of essential information. To ensure an accurate assessment, instrumentation was put in place, including a measurement campaign to quantify energy flows.

Once all the data had been collected, the crucial analysis stage began, involving the production of a detailed energy balance sheet, the identification of actions to improve energy performance and an estimate of the investment required to implement these actions. The conclusion of this energy audit resulted in the creation of an exhaustive study report, documenting the results and recommendations.

Finally, the audit was presented in its entirety, with a detailed report and an oral presentation of the results. This methodical process enabled GCK EMI to obtain a comprehensive overview of its energy consumption and savings opportunities, and to direct its future actions towards more efficient and sustainable energy management.

An audit to improve industrial performance

After a 2-month audit, the results revealed a clear vision of the energy situation at GCK EMI. In-depth analysis of energy bills, the load curve and the energy mix enabled potential energy savings to be identified and quantified. The recommendations put forward highlight concrete ways of optimising control of the production site’s consumption.

The action plan resulting from this audit is presented as a hierarchical roadmap, made up of 22 Energy Performance Improvement Actions. These actions, divided according to their nature into Behavioural, Technical and Organisational, aim to significantly reduce the site’s consumption. The financial evaluation indicates an average Return on Investment (ROI) of 6.6 years, guaranteeing medium-term profitability.

The improvement plan is based on seven key themes: Management, Awareness, Waste, Sobriety, Efficiency, Energy recovery and Renewable energy.

A successful collaboration between GCK and Cleaneo

The results demonstrate the concrete potential of the proposed initiative to modernise the site and position it favourably as part of a sustainable strategy.

The mentioned gains below are achieved following the full activation of the action plan.

  •  Gains on consumption (kWh): 70.8% (base year 2022), including 13.3% gains achieved without financial investment.
  • Savings in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions: 107 tCo2eq (base year 2022)
